Primary aldosteronism is associated with decreased LDL and HDL particle concentrations and increased GlycA, a pro-inflammatory glycoprotein biomarker

Clinical Endocrinology Nov 02, 2018

Berends AMA, et al. - Given that primary aldosteronism (PA) might increase cardiovascular risk even more that its effects on systemic blood pressure, researchers assessed plasma (apo)lipoproteins and lipoprotein particle characteristics, GlycA (a pro-inflammatory glycoprotein biomarker of enhanced chronic inflammation), and plasma total branched chain amino acids (measured utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) in subjects with PA, control subjects without hypertension, subjects with treated hypertension, and subjects with untreated hypertension. An association was found between PA and lower concentrations of LDL and HDL particles and somewhat with lower triglycerides (TG) and triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) particle concentrations. Findings revealed that PA was also identified by increased GlycA levels, showing enhanced low grade chronic inflammation. Cardiovascular disease development in PA may be accelerated by increased GlycA and low HDL particle concentrations.
