Previsit screening for parental vaccine hesitancy: A cluster randomized trial
Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Opel DJ, Henrikson N, Lepere K, et al. - Researchers undertook this cluster randomized controlled trial, to determine how childhood vaccine uptake can be influenced by vaccine hesitancy screening. This inquiry was run in pediatric primary care clinics in Washington state. Eligible candidates were vaccine-hesitant parents (VHPs) with a healthy newborn receiving health supervision at participating clinics. A summary of parents’ 15-item Parent Attitudes About Childhood Vaccines Survey (PACV) responses and analysis of their PACV score were received by intervention providers; discretion was given to providers about how they acted on this information. Only the placebo survey items were completed by VHPs at control clinics, and a summary of their responses was received by their child’s provider; control providers continued to be blinded to parent VHP status. Enrollment of 24 clinics (12 in each arm) and 156 parents (65 in the intervention arm) was done. They found that the outcome did not differ significantly between arms. Experts concluded no significant link of vaccine hesitancy screening with days underimmunized.
