Previously diagnosed cancer and mortality after ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction treated with primary angioplasty
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Oct 10, 2019
Iglesias-Garriz I, et al. - In this prospective cohort observational analysis, researchers determined the impact of a previous cancer diagnosis on the outcome of patients with ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary coronary intervention. Total mortality was considered as the primary endpoint. Overall 917 patients were analyzed, including 53 cancer survivors. A median follow-up of 643 days revealed the deaths of 100 patients; 88 (10.2%) cases without a cancer diagnosis and 12 (22.6%) with a previous cancer diagnosis, which was significantly different. Cancer survivors showed a trend towards a lower use of coronary stents. A worse prognosis was not observed in participants with with a previous cancer diagnosis. The baseline variations between both groups could explain the observed difference in the crude mortality rate. In cases with an acute STEMI, not including prior cancer diagnosis in the clinical decision process was recommended.
