Previous live births and induced abortions may precede later development of Graves’ hyperthyroidism
European Thyroid Journal Apr 21, 2019
Carlé A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied the link between reproductive history and later development of various nosological subtypes of overt hyperthyroidism. They included incident hyperthyroid women from the Danish population, and from the same sub-population they recruited 4 euthyroid age-sex-region-matched controls for each case. Cases/controls for hyperthyroid were: Graves’ disease (GD, n = 232/928), multinodular toxic goitre (MNTG, n = 91/364), solitary toxic adenoma (STA, n = 21/84). There were no associations between any reproductive factor (ie, age at menarche/menopause, reproductive span, number of pregnancies/childbirths/abortions, investigations for infertility, and years on oral contraceptives) and MNTG or STA development. According to findings, the development of Graves' hyperthyroidism after the post-partum period may follow childbirths and induced abortions. This was not the case with hyperthyroidism's non-autoimmune subtypes.
