Previous colonic resection is a risk factor for surgical relapse in Crohn’s disease
Digestive and Liver Diseases Aug 10, 2018
Coletta M, et al. - In the present study, researchers assessed, in a large monocentric cohort, post-surgical outcomes for patients with Crohn’s disease as well as variables correlated with clinical and surgical relapse. Participants in the study were patients with Crohn’s disease who had surgery for ileal and colonic Crohn’s disease between 2004 and 2016 and on at least one-year follow-up after surgery. For patients with Crohn’s disease, post-surgery recurrence was frequent. Risk factors for Crohn’s disease recurrence were active smoking and young age at diagnosis. Findings suggested that patients with colonic resection were more prone to relapse necessitating a second surgical intervention vs patients undergoing small-bowel surgery.
