Previous antibiotic use and the development of Kawasaki disease: A matched pair case‐control study
Pediatrics International Sep 18, 2020
Fukazawa M, Fukazawa M, Nanishi E, et al. - Since etiology of Kawasaki disease (KD) is still unclear, therefore, researchers investigated potential factors resulting in intestinal dysbiosis related to KD, by performing this age‐ and gender‐matched case‐control study with 50 patients and 200 controls. Previous antibiotic use was found to be correlated with the patients who encountered KD, but not other variables, including breastfeeding and group nursery. In infants under 12 months of age, but not in older children, cesarean birth was suggested as an associated factor besides previous antibiotic use. Overall, findings revealed a link between previous antibiotic administration and the onset of KD. Experts inferred that, by impacting the intestinal microbiota in infants and young children, antibiotics possibly be a contributor to KD development.
