Preventive health care utilization among youths who have run away, experienced homelessness, or been stably housed
JAMA Jul 10, 2020
O’Brien JRG, Barnes AJ, Scal PB, et al. - In order to inform clinical practice and interventions, researchers have sought to compare the use of preventive health care among subgroups of youths who have run away, have experienced homelessness, or have been stably housed. While it is well known that youths with unstable housing face elevated health risks relative to peers with stable housing, there is considerable heterogeneity in experiences of youths of housing instability, with health, clinical practice, and policy implications. For instance, adolescents who are homeless with their families may have unique health needs relative to those who are unaccompanied, and youths who run away may be at especially high risk for poor health outcomes. Since annual preventive visits are recommended for all youth, they can be an opportunity to discuss the status of housing and address the health needs of young people facing housing instability.
