Prevention of postoperative delirium in elderly patients planned for elective surgery: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Interventions in Aging Jun 22, 2019
Janssen TL, et al. - Researchers summarized available literature data on preventive interventions against the development of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing elective surgery. The relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and before-and-after studies were searched and included, and acute admission, planned ICU admission, and cardiac patients were excluded. Overall 31 RCTs and four before-and-after studies were analyzed. The reductions in postoperative delirium incidences with the implementation of the intervention were evident in 19 studies. Based on the findings, they concluded that a successful decrease in the incidence of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing elective, non-cardiac surgery can be achieved via multicomponent interventions, the use of antipsychotics, bispectral index-guidance, and dexmedetomidine treatment.
