Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV: A review of the achievements and challenges in Burkina-Faso
HIV/AIDS - Research and Palliative Care Jul 29, 2019
Ghoma Linguissi LS, et al. - Researchers performed this review to outline the accomplishments and challenges of HIV prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programs in Burkina-Faso. A historical view of PMTCT implementation in Burkina-Faso, the efficacy of efforts for improving PMTCT service delivery and encouraging the retention of mothers and babies in care, and the effect of male partner participation on PMTCT in Burkina-Faso were assessed. Performing a literature search, they identified studies that revealed a reduction in HIV transmission rate from 10.4% in 2006 to 0% in 2015 in relation to PMTCT. They identified the PMTCT program as the most effective way to deliver care to HIV-infected pregnant women and their children. Evidence that women’s completion of PMTCT is associated with male partner involvement is part of the basis for the current PMTCT policy.
