Prevention and management of bacterial infections of the donor site of flaps raised for reconstruction in head and neck surgery
Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Jun 22, 2018
Zirk M, et al. - Experts evaluated the data regarding the surgical site infections (SSI) of the donor site of different flaps raised for reconstruction. They retrospectively gauged the medical data, surgical reports and wound management protocols of 267 patients who received reconstruction of the head and neck after ablative surgery with regard to the bacterial donor site infections. They found that the predominant bacteria detected in donor site wounds were gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus spp. Authors were suggested not to neglect the infection with gram-negative pathogens for wound care management.
