Prevalence, risk and genetic characteristics of drug-resistant tuberculosis in a tertiary care tuberculosis hospital in China
Infection and Drug Resistance Aug 11, 2019
Zhao LL, Huang MX, Xiao TY, et al. - With isolates from 189 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) at Fuzhou Pulmonary Hospital in China, researchers conducted a retrospective study to assess the prevalence of drug-resistant TB as well as its risk and genetic features. Resistance to at least one of the seven anti-TB drugs, including isoniazid, rifampin, streptomycin, ethambutol, capreomycin, kanzmycin and ofloxacin, was noted in 28.6% of the isolates; 9.5% were multidrug-resistant TB and 1.1% were extensively drug-resistant TB isolates. They identified a significantly higher risk of developing drug resistance among patients in rural areas and among previously treated patients. Furthermore, 111 of these isolates (58.7%) were Beijing genotype strains, 84 (75.7%) belonged to modern Beijing sublineage. katG315, rpoB531 rpsL43, embB306, rrs1401 and gyrA94 were the most common mutations identified.
