Prevalence, predictors, and implications for appropriate use of active surveillance management among black men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jun 03, 2019
Taku N, et al. - Using the National Cancer Database, researchers assessed the prevalence as well as predictors of active surveillance (AS) approach in black men (BM) who received a diagnosis of low-risk prostate cancer (LRPC) following the inclusion of AS in LRPC consensus guidelines. The participants were BM and white men (WM) suffering LRPC (prostate-specific antigen ≤10 ng/mL, Gleason score ≤6, clinical stage T1-T2a). Findings reflected an increasing utilization of AS for BM with LRPC. They also found that AS utilization for BM was impacted by sociodemographic characteristics (SDCs) and may not differ from AS utilization among WM. An adequate assessment of prostatic disease as well as suitable disease management for BM with LRPC may require careful consideration of prostate biopsy technique and sampling as well as SDCs at time of treatment planning.
