Prevalence/potential risk factors for motoric cognitive risk and its relationship to falls in elderly Chinese people: A cross‐sectional study

European Journal of Neurology May 28, 2021

Yuan JL, Zhao RX, Ma YJ, et al. - This cross-sectional study was based on the Rugao Longevity and Aging Study (RuLAS), which sought to explore the prevalence and potential risk factors of motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) and its association with falls in Chinese community‐dwelling older adults. Data reported that the prevalence of subjective memory complaints (SMCs), slow walking speed and MCR in the RuLAS cohort (N = 1,592) was 51.9%, 15.6% and 8.3%, respectively. After adjusting for other covariates, a farming profession, a history of cerebrovascular disease and hospitalization were all found to be risk factors for MCR. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of falls was increased by MCR, SMC and slow walking speed. Early detection of potential MCR risk factors can help to prevent the occurrence of adverse health events such as falls in the elderly.
