Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease: A meta‐analysis
The Laryngoscope Oct 26, 2020
Strum D, Kapoor E, Shim T, et al. - Researchers conducted the first systematic investigation of the correlation between sickle cell disease (SCD) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in pediatric patients across the globe. In addition, they sought factors contributing to the severity of SNHL. Searching PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, 138 initial studies were identified; of these, 17 were selected for analysis after applying the exclusion criteria. The meta‐analysis was performed including a total of 1,282 SCD patients and 553 controls. Findings revealed a statistically significant rise in the prevalence of SNHL in children with SCD compared with the general population with a cumulative risk ratio of 3.33.
