Prevalence of previously undiagnosed abdominal aortic aneurysms in patients with intracranial aneurysms: From the Brain and Aortic Aneurysms Study (BAAS)

Journal of Vascular Surgery Jan 25, 2020

Erben Y, et al. - Researchers designed a single institution prospective observational inception cohort study from the Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, between August 14, 2011, and February 10, 2014 in order to report on the prevalence of previously undiagnosed abdominal aortic aneurysms in cases with intracranial aneurysms. Among 81 consecutive patients, ultrasound screening revealed abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in 10 (12%) patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The mean AAA diameter of 3.4 cm was reported. Observations thus suggest a sufficiently high prevalence of AAA in cases with ruptured intracranial aneurysms in surviving patients which justifies AAA screening.
