Prevalence of positional skull deformities in 530 premature infants with a corrected age of up to 6 months: A multicenter study
BMC Pediatrics Jan 08, 2020
Yang W, Chen J, Shen W, et al. - In this multicenter study, researchers examined positional skull deformities (PD), characterized by asymmetry and flattening of the skull due to external forces, and its features in premature infants to help its early identification and intervention and thus improve the quality of life for premature infants. Five hundred thirty preterm infants were analyzed who visited the outpatient departments at Xinqiao Hospital of Army Medical University and Maternal and Child Health Care Hospitals of Wanzhou and Yongchuan Districts in Chongqing from September 1, 2016, to August 31, 2017. According to the findings, the incidence of PD among preterm infants is high. PD incidence and severity increased as gestational age decreased. Healthcare providers, therefore, should implement early detection of PD and intervention to prevent adverse outcomes. In this analysis, the extremely high incidence of brachycephaly and the extremely low incidence of dolichocephaly are likely due to the variation in cranial metrics caused by cultural differences. It is necessary to establish the Chinese standards for cranial measurements of infants.
