Prevalence of pain and its association with symptoms of post‐traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and distress in 846 cancer patients: A cross sectional study

Psycho-Oncology Dec 07, 2020

Unseld M, Zeilinger EL, Fellinger M, et al. - In a large sample of cancer patients, researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to examine the prevalence of pain and its association with symptoms of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and psychological distress. The Post-Traumatic Symptom Scale (PTSS-10) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales were used to evaluate cancer patients who received outpatient care at the Medical University of Vienna from 2010 to 2019. Participants in the study were 846 patients (428 male and 418 female patients, mean age 57.4 years) out of these, 537 (63.5%) patients reported experiencing pain. In 13.9%, 15.1% and 25.3%, significant symptoms of depression, anxiety and distress, respectively, were present. In cancer outpatients, this study showed strong correlations of pain with PTSD, depression and psychological distress, but not anxiety, using internationally recognized and reliable screening instruments. Taking into account the psychological wellbeing and quality of life of patients, pain management and psychosocial care should be considered a primary target for cancer outpatients.
