Prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea among patients with rheumatoid arthritis and its association with age and body mass index: A systematic review and meta-analysis

International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jul 28, 2021

Thakur B, Pathak M, Singh P, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the prevalence and possible risk factors of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were searched for potential studies published before October 30, 2020. For this meta-analysis, eight studies with a total of 37,285 patients were identified. OSA was found in 29.8% of the RA cohort, with significant heterogeneity. However, when studies were restricted to the OSA diagnosis based on the Berlin questionnaire with very low heterogeneity, the prevalence was 45.3%. Higher BMI is the primary risk factor for the development of OSA in RA. As a result, controlling BMI may be a preventive strategy for OSA in RA patients.
