Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults with cerebral palsy
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Jan 24, 2019
Heyn PC, et al. -In 70 ambulatory adults with cerebral palsy (CP), researchers studied the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and the relationship between common metabolic markers and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels. Metabolic syndrome in 17.1% of the cohort was identified, which was higher than the 10% seen in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) registry. As compared to the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) normative population data, the FHS CVD 30-year lipid and body mass index (BMI)-based risk factor results exhibited that 20% to 40% of the cohort was at greater risk of developing CVD. The results obtained from the cross-sectional study indicate that adults with CP were at higher risk of CVD and metabolic syndrome vs the general population, probably due to impaired mobility. A positive correlation was found between GMFCS level, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio.
