Prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health metrics in the Million Veteran Program
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 19, 2018
Nguyen XMT, et al. - In a cross-sectional study, researchers evaluated the prevalence of ideal Life's Simple Seven (LSS) metrics in 554,855 US veterans enrolled in the Million Veteran Program (MVP) from 2011-2017. Each LSS metric was categorized using the American Heart Association's established criteria as either poor, intermediate or ideal for a veteran at time of MVP enrollment. An extremely low prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health factors was seen among veterans in the MVP. The least likely to be achieved among the seven metrics (adiposity/BMI, smoking status, diet, physical activity, total cholesterol, blood pressure and plasma glucose) was ideal diet (0.4%), specifically the recommendation for fruits and vegetables (at least 4.5cups/day) intake. Physical activity frequency was also particularly low (3.8%). These results highlight the need to improve modifiable lifestyle factors, which could result in subsequent reduction in CVD burden among veterans.
