Prevalence of hypogammaglobulinemia in adult invasive pneumococcal disease

Cowan J, et al. - In admitted invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) cases, researchers examined the prevalence of underlying hypogammaglobulinemia and ascertained whether IPD cases had received preventative treatment. They observed a high mortality among IPD cases. Hypogammaglobulinemia was present in at least 13.5% of IPD cases. In cases with hematological malignancy and IPD, secondary hypogammaglobulinemia was particularly common.
