Prevalence of hepatitis G virus infection among 67,348 blood donors in mainland China
BMC Public Health Jun 10, 2019
Wang T, et al. - Using data from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Chinese BioMedical Literature Database and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, researchers assessed the overall prevalence of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection in Chinese blood donors. They also focused on the potential risk of HGV infection via blood transfusion in China. This analysis included 102 studies with 67,348 blood donors, covering 26 provinces or municipalities. These studies were published from 1996 to 2016. According to the findings, blood donors from China had HGV prevalence similar to that in blood donors from many other countries. The HGV prevalence noted among Chinese donors was higher than that of some other hepatitis viruses, such as hepatitis B virus. Even after routine blood donor screening, risk of transfusion-transmitted HGV existed, particularly in those patients coinfected with other hepatitis viruses and/or human immunodeficiency virus. Based on the findings, adding HGV screening for blood transfusions in mainland China in the future may be recommended.
