Prevalence of dyslipidemia associated with complications in diabetic patients: A nationwide study in Thailand
Lipids in Health and Disease Apr 12, 2019
Narindrarangkura P, et al. - Using secondary data from multicenter hospital-based diabetes and hypertension registries (2010–2014), researchers determined dyslipidemia prevalence among diabetic patients in Thailand, and evaluated the connection between dyslipidemia and diabetes-related complications. According to findings, high dyslipidemia prevalence was evident among Thai diabetic patients. Sex, age, obesity, central obesity, primary care unit treatment, and several vascular complications were associated with dyslipidemia in this patient population. The investigators suggested that these findings should raise awareness of the need for healthcare providers to provide better dyslipidemic management to Thai patients with diabetes. Indeed, regular follow-up, proper advice, and greater attention to vascular complications in primary prevention could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. A positive step towards decreasing the prevalence of dyslipidemia in diabetic patients would be specific efforts to educate patients and increase their awareness of the need to change behaviors and regularly take medication.
