Prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults who reported medical cost as a barrier to seeking health care: Findings from a nationally representative sample
BMC Geriatrics Jul 25, 2019
Cheruvu VK, et al. - Using cross-sectional data, researchers assessed the link between delay in consulting a doctor when required but unable to due to the medical expense and symptoms of current depression in older adults. They analyzed data from the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 12 states and Puerto Rico (n = 24,018). The probability of reporting symptoms of depression was found to be significantly more in older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) who experienced the burden of medical cost for healthcare. Healthcare professionals and policymakers should consider more effective interventions to enhance access to healthcare among older adults, according to the researchers.
