Prevalence of dental caries in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Oral Health Sep 18, 2019
Wang Y, et al. - Among children and adolescents with T1D, researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of dental caries. For relevant studies examining the prevalence of dental caries in children and adolescents with T1D from July 1971 to December 2018, a systematic search strategy was performed using PubMed, EMBASE and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. Using a random effects model, the pooled prevalence with 95% confidence intervals and subgroup analyses have been calculated. A total of 10 articles involving 538 people were involved after screening 358 non-duplicated articles. Among children and adolescents with T1D, the overall prevalence of dental caries was 67%. It was noted that the prevalence was highest in South America and lowest in diabetic patients with good metabolic control. For diabetic children and adolescents, especially those with poor metabolic control, screening and preventive treatment should be included in dental clinical routines.
