Prevalence of coronary artery calcium in patients with atrial fibrillation with and without cardiovascular risk factors

The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 12, 2020

Chen LQ, Tsiamtsiouris E, Singh H, et al. - In a cohort of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with mean age 66 years, 71% were male, researchers evaluated coronary artery calcium (CAC). The participants were retrospectively examined and included 324 consecutive AF patients who underwent CT angiogram before AF ablation. Cardiovascular risk was prospectively obtained. Findings revealed a high prevalence of coronary calcium among AF patients, including those who did not have cardiovascular risk factors. Experts also noted that advanced CAC could potentially shift CHA2DS2-VASc score in many AF patients. The likely clinical value of characterizing CAC in AF was suggested in terms of thromboembolic risk stratification as well as management of preventive cardiac therapies.
