Prevalence of contraindications to progestin-only contraceptive pills in a multi-institution patient database
Contraception Feb 03, 2021
Dutton C, et al. - In the present study, the researchers calculated the prevalence of contraindications to progestin-only pills (POPs) among reproductive age women to assess the safety of over the counter provision. In order to identify women aged 10-45 presenting for preventive care, and a subset of this initial cohort also presenting for contraceptive services, this descriptive study queried a multi-institution U.S. database to quantify the prevalence of contraindications to POPs using diagnosis and procedure codes. Participants in the study were 813,888 females seeking preventive care between 2009-2015. The prevalence of POP contraindications among females of reproductive age is low. This result confirms the relative safety of an over the counter progestin-only contraceptive pill.
