Prevalence of continuous pulse oximetry monitoring in hospitalized children with bronchiolitis not requiring supplemental oxygen
JAMA Apr 24, 2020
Bonafide CP, Xiao R, Brady PW, et al. - Researchers sought to measure continuous pulse oximetry use among children hospitalized with viral bronchiolitis and not receiving any supplemental oxygen. From December 1, 2018, through March 31, 2019, they included 56 US and Canadian hospitals in the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings Network and 3,612 patient observations of children hospitalized with bronchiolitis without receipt of supplemental oxygen in this multicenter cross-sectional study. Per observation, there was high prevalence of continuous pulse oximetry monitoring among a sample of hospitalized children with bronchiolitis but without an apparent indication for its use. They noted wide variation in its use among hospitals ranging from 2% to 92%, with a mean of 46%.
