Prevalence of celiac disease in patients with iron deficiency anemia – A systematic review with meta-analysis
Gastroenterology | Apr 26, 2018
Mahadev S, et al. - Authors scrutinized the prevalence of biopsy-verified celiac disease in patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). Findings illustrated a prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease 3.2% (95% CI, 2.6%–3.9%) in patients with IDA. It was determined that the prevalence of celiac disease was not notably higher in studies with a mean participant age older or younger than years, nor in studies with a mixed-sex vs female-predominant (≥60%) population. Therefore, approximately 1 in 31 patients with IDA presented with a histologic evidence of celiac disease. Yielded prevalence value justified the practice of testing patients with IDA for celiac disease.
