Prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve and associated aortopathy in newborns in Copenhagen, Denmark
JAMA Feb 12, 2021
Sillesen AS, Vøgg O, Pihl C, et al. - Via performing the Copenhagen Baby Heart Study, a cross-sectional, population-based study of 25,556 newborns in Denmark who underwent transthoracic echocardiography, researchers sought to report on the prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve among newborns and the extent of correlated disease of the aorta. Bicuspid aortic valve was noted to be prevalent in 0.77%; among these, aortopathy was present in 33%. This suggests common occurrence of associated aortic disease in newborns with BAV, indicating this as a fetal malformation.
