Prevalence of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in parents of children with cancer: A meta-analysis

Pediatric Blood & Cancer Mar 05, 2019

van Warmerdam J, et al. - In parents of children with cancer, researchers determined the prevalence of anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by searching four databases for pertinent articles. Of the 11,394 identified articles, 58 met the criteria for inclusion. The results obtained from the meta-analysis indicate that the prevalence reported was highly varied, ranging from 5% to 65% for anxiety, 7% to 91% for depression and 4% to 75% for PTSD. Overall, investigators suggested that parents of cancer children have a higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD than population controls. However, the prevalence of mental illness reported was varied widely, hindering any definite findings on absolute prevalence.
