Prevalence of and risk factors for metabolic associated fatty liver disease in an urban population in China: A cross-sectional comparative study

BMC Gastroenterology May 14, 2021

Chen Yl, Li H, Li S, et al. - Given that metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is a new definition for liver disease associated with known metabolic dysfunction, researchers sought to examine the prevalence and risk factors for MAFLD based on the new diagnostic criteria to better illustrate the connection between MAFLD and multiple metabolic disorders, and provide a more precise reference for the management and prevention of MAFLD. This cross-sectional comparative study was carried out in a health examination population who had abdominal ultrasonography in China. The study involved 139,170 Chinese adults, 78,176 individuals (56.2%) were males and 60,994 (43.8%) were females. Data reported that the prevalence of MAFLD was 26.1% (males: 35.4%; females: 14.1%). MAFLD is common in China and varies significantly by age, gender, BMI, and female menopausal status groups. MAFLD is linked to metabolic disorders, particularly obesity, and metabolic disorders play important roles in the occurrence of MAFLD in nonobese people. Metabolic syndrome (MS), dyslipidaemia, hyperuricaemia, and elevated liver enzymes are all common in MAFLD patients. MAFLD frequently coexists with systemic metabolic disorders, and a deep inner relationship between MAFLD and MS may exist. To improve the management of MAFLD, metabolic disorders should be considered.
