Prevalence of adolescent cannabis vaping: A systematic review and meta-analysis of US and Canadian studies
JAMA Oct 29, 2021
Lim CCW, Sun T, Leung J, et al. - The findings of epidemiological studies that reported the global prevalence of adolescent cannabis vaping by survey year and school grades are summarized.
PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science yielded 17 studies meeting the eligibility criteria (n = 198,845 adolescents).
Findings revealed doubling of the lifetime prevalence of cannabis vaping from 2013 to 2020 (6.1% to 13.6%), doubling of past 12-month use from 2017 to 2020 (7.2% to 13.2%), and increase in the 30-day prevalence of cannabis vaping 7-fold from 2013 to 2020 (1.6% to 8.4%).
There may be a shift in preference for cannabis products from dried herb to cannabis oil.
Overall, there is a necessity for more effective prevention and response measures to mitigate the rising prevalence of cannabis vaping among adolescents.
