Prevalence, incidence and mortality of delirium in patients with COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Age and Aging May 17, 2021
Shao SC, Lai CC, Chen YH, et al. - This systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out to determine the prevalence, incidence as well as mortality of delirium among patients suffering from COVID-19 infection. A comprehensive literature exploration on Pubmed and Embase from inception to December 1, 2020 revealed 48 studies comprising 11,553 COVID-19 patients from 13 countries. For delirium in COVID-19 patients, the pooled prevalence, incidence and death rates were noted to be 24.3%, 32.4% and 44.5%, respectively. The prevalence, incidence and mortality rates for delirium in COVID-19 patients aged over 65 yrs were estimated to be 28.2%, 25.2% and 48.4%, respectively, and these estimates were 15.7%, 71.4% and 21.2%, respectively, for patients under 65 yrs. Overall, almost 1 out of 3 COVID-19 patients developed delirium, and its presence was linked with 3-fold overall mortality in COVID-19 cases. Thus, systematic assessment of delirium as well as monitoring of related symptoms in COVID-19 patients should be performed by first-line healthcare providers.
