Wertenteil S, et al. - In this investigation, researchers sought to evaluate the prevalence of pemphigus (a bullous disease in which autoantibodies disrupt intercellular keratinocyte adhesion) in the United States. Clinically, the loss of epidermal integrity results in flaccid blisters and skin and mucous membrane erosions. While systemic corticosteroid treatment has mitigated its life-threatening course, pemphigus remains linked to significant morbidity and mortality.
