Prevalence and trends of overweight and obesity in European children from 1999 to 2016: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Pediatrics Oct 12, 2019
Garrido-Miguel M, Cavero-Redondo I, Álvarez-Bueno C, et al. - Using a systematic methodology, researchers evaluated prevalence trends in measured overweight and obesity among children across Europe from 1999 to 2016 by a meta-analysis of 103 studies including 477,620 children (aged 2 to 13 years) in 28 European countries. In the Iberian region and in the Mediterranean region, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity tended to decrease from 30.3% to 25.6% and tended to increase from 22.9% to 25.0%, respectively. In Atlantic Europe or Central Europe, no substantial variations were observed where the overweight and obesity prevalence varied from 18.3% to 19.3% and from 15.8% to 15.3%, respectively. Overall, the authors concluded that childhood overweight and obesity prevalence was very high, but trends in most European countries have stabilized. In the current levels and trends of overweight and obesity, there are substantial differences between countries. In some Mediterranean countries, the increasing prevalence is troubling.
