Prevalence and treatment patterns of autism spectrum disorder in the United States, 2016
JAMA Pediatrics Feb 08, 2019
Xu G, et al. - Researchers used nationally representative data to estimate the prevalence and treatment patterns of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among US children. Participants in the study were 43,032 children aged 3 to 17 years. Findings revealed that the weighted prevalence of ever-diagnosed ASD was 2.79% and current ASD was 2.50%. It was noted that the state-level prevalence of ever-diagnosed ASD varied from 1.54% in Texas to 4.88% in Florida. According to the findings, the prevalence of ASD in the US was relatively high, and it varied substantially across US states. Approximately 30% of US children with ASD did not receive treatment for behavior or medication, which requires a critical need to understand and address the barriers to adequate treatment for these children.
