Prevalence and risk factors of atrioventricular block among 15 million Chinese health examination participants in 2018: A nation-wide cross-sectional study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Jun 16, 2021
Shan R, Ning Y, Ma Y, et al. - This study intended to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of atrioventricular (AV) block among Chinese health examination adults. Researchers examined a sum of 15,181,402 participants aged ≥ 18 years (mean age 41.5 ± 13.4 years, 53.2% men) who had undergone an electrocardiogram as a part of routine health examination in 2018. They calculated overall and stratified prevalence (by age, gender, and city size) of all, first-, second- and third-degree AV blocks. They conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to evaluate risk factors correlated with AV block. The data showed that the first-degree AV block is relatively common while severe AV block is rare in health examination adults. Among the elderly, AV block was highly prevalent. The findings revealed that the risk of AV block was correlated with older age, being male and metabolic factors.
