Prevalence and prognostic impact of inhalation injury among burn patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Feb 05, 2020
Galeiras R, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to determine the prevalence of inhalation injury in burn patients. Further, they investigated its prognostic value in relation to in-hospital mortality. Searching the PubMed and EMBASE databases, they included 54 studies including a total of 408,157 patients for the analysis. The pooled inhalation prevalence was estimated to be 15.7%. The summarized odds ratio of 3.2 was estimated for in-hospital mortality secondary to an inhalation injury. Results thereby suggest a wide range of prevalence rates of inhalation injury and a significant relationship between this entity and in-hospital mortality in burn patients. However, when adjusted for disease severity, this association did not remain significant.
