Prevalence and prediction of higher estimated gastric content in parturients at full cervical dilatation: A prospective cohort study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Aug 11, 2018
Desgranges FP, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers looked at the prevalence and the predictive factors of higher estimated gastric content in parturients at full cervical dilatation with epidural analgesia and allowed to drink during the labour. In these subjects, they also evaluated if the antral area measured in the semirecumbent position (SR-CSA) could identify higher estimated gastric content. They observed higher estimated gastric content at full cervical dilatation was present among around a quarter of parturients with epidural analgesia and free access to clear fluids during labour. Findings also suggested the possible utility of SR-CSA as a tool to provide the fast ultrasound evaluation of the gastric content status in case of emergent obstetrical procedures at full cervical dilatation.
