Prevalence and payments for traumatic injury compared with common acute diseases by episode of care in Medicare beneficiaries, 2008-2014
JAMA Jun 11, 2019
Montgomery JR, et al. - In this investigation, researchers quantified the occurrence and expenditure of traumatic injury compared to other common medical diseases resulting in acute hospitalization among Medicare beneficiaries. The burden of traumatic injury in older adults is underappreciated, as it is the predominant cause of death among kids and younger adults and thus often thought to be primarily a disease of the young. However, as the U.S. population ages, traumatic injury in older adults is growing in incidence. Older patients pose special care difficulties as they have reduced physiologic reserve, have more comorbid conditions, and are at risk of particular complications like delirium.
