Prevalence and outcomes of prenatal recreational cannabis use in high-income countries: A scoping review
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nov 15, 2019
Singh S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the prevalence of recreational cannabis use among pregnant women. In addition, they assessed the health outcomes associated with prenatal recreational cannabis use and investigated the potential impact of recreational cannabis legalization on this population. Systematically searching five databases and the grey literature (2000–2019), they included 41 publications in this work. The analysis revealed a substantial variation in the overall prevalence of prenatal cannabis use (min–max: 0.24–22.6%); the greatest use was reported in the first trimester. Cannabis users exhibited higher concomitant use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and tobacco than nonusers. They observed association of prenatal cannabis use with select neonatal, but not with maternal, health outcomes. Insufficient data were obtained for performing the comparison of prenatal cannabis use between the pre- and postlegalisation periods.
