Prevalence and outcomes of chronic liver disease in patients receiving dialysis: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Clinical Kidney Journal Nov 24, 2021

Swift O, Sharma S, Ramanarayanan S, et al. - In this study, among patients receiving dialysis, chronic liver disease (CLD) was prevalent. Increased risk of mortality was observed in relation to CLD in this setting.

  • This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 eligible studies (which included adults >18 years with end-stage kidney disease receiving dialysis) comprising 320,777 patients.

  • The prevalence of cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was estimated to be 5% and 55%, respectively.

  • Two-fold higher mortality was noted in patients with CLD vs those without (OR 2.19; 95% confidence interval 1.39-3.45).

  • Elevated risk of CLD was observed in relation to the presence of hepatitis B (OR 13.47) and C (OR 7.05).

  • A high risk of bias was observed in all studies assessing NAFLD, and no data were identified on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

  • Greater deaths due to CLD, cancer and infection, were reported among cirrhotic patients.
