Sanford NN, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers used data from a comprehensive nationwide survey to determine the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), as well as the associated rates of nondisclosure among patients with cancer and cancer survivors in the United States. In all, worse survival was observed in a small subset of patients who reported CAM use (n=258; 0.01% of the study population) vs patients who did not use CAM, and refusal of conventional cancer therapy seemed to mediate this finding. Overall, the investigators concluded that there is a need for an accurate evaluation of the prevalence of CAM use because CAM use has potentially serious, adverse, and wide-reaching implications in patients with cancer.
