Prevalence and incidence of kidney diseases leading to hospital admission in people living with HIV in France: An observational nationwide study
BMJ Open May 10, 2019
Louis M, et al. - Using the French Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d’Information database, researchers conducted this study to characterize hospitalizations for kidney disease (KD) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in France, to and identify factors correlated with such hospitalizations, since data on hospitalization-related KD epidemiology is globally scarce. Study participants included around 10,862 PLHIV. According to results, the prevalence of patients hospitalized for KD in PLHIV was 1.5 higher than in the general population, and significantly increased from 3.0% in 2008 to 3.7% in 2013. Acute renal failure was the main cause of hospitalization for KD. In PLHIV, admission to hospital for KD is more common than in the general population and increases over time. Renal biopsies rarely document glomerular diseases. Particularly concerned are older patients and those with cardiovascular disease. Nephrolithiasis and pyelonephritis were the other common motives for admission.
