Prevalence and incidence of endometriosis in Australian women: A data linkage cohort study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Aug 10, 2020
Rowlands IJ, Abbott JA, Montgomery GW, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the prevalence and incidence of endometriosis among Australian women via performing a population‐based cohort study linked to administrative health records. From a prospective cohort study of 14,247 women conducted between 1996 and 2018, they assessed 13,508 Australian women, born 1973‐1978. Analysis of follow up data for 20 years suggest that by the age of 44, one in nine women had clinically confirmed or suspected endometriosis, with most diagnosed during their early thirties. Findings emphasize endometriosis as significant public health issue that needs increased surveillance, clinical awareness and management. They support making efforts to enhance information on the etiology of the disease and optimal methods for disease management.
