Prevalence and incidence of age-related macular degeneration in Europe: A systematic review and meta-analysis
British Journal of Ophthalmology Nov 22, 2019
Li JQ, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers analyzed the prevalence and incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Europe. Meta-analysis and meta-regression on time-trends, age, countries, regions, gender and classification systems for AMD have been conducted. The pooled prevalence estimates were extrapolated to the year 2050 based on Eurostat population projections. Included were 22 prevalence studies and 4 incidence studies published since 1996. According to findings, around 67 million people in the EU are currently affected by any AMD and this number is expected to increase by 15% by 2050 due to population ageing. Over the years and decades to come, monitoring and treating people with advanced stages of the disease will need additional healthcare resources and comprehensive healthcare planning.
