Prevalence and impact of metabolic syndrome in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jun 09, 2021
Zhou J, Liu C, Zhou P, et al. - By conducting this large registry, researchers sought to determine the prevalence as well as influence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients suffering from multivessel coronary artery disease (MVD) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). They enrolled consecutive patients with ACS referred to primary percutaneous coronary intervention and those with MVD. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), defined as a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, was set as the primary outcome. This study sample comprised 2532 patients, and MetS was present in 993 (39.2%). Findings revealed patients with MVD and acute coronary syndrome frequently had MetS. Young age and female gender were more likely to be identified in patients with MetS. However, MACE post-primary percutaneous coronary intervention was not independently predicted by MetS in those patients.
