Prevalence and economic burden of malnutrition diagnosis among patients presenting to United States emergency departments
Academic Emergency Medicine Dec 11, 2019
Lanctin DP, Merced-Nieves F, Mallett RM, et al. - Researchers examined patients presenting to United States (US) emergency departments (EDs) for the prevalence and economic burden of diagnosed malnutrition. In this retrospective analysis of Healthcare Cost and Utilization Nationwide Emergency Department Sample data, they analyzed 238 million ED visits from 2006 to 2014. The analysis revealed that in US EDs, despite a low rate of diagnosed malnutrition, there is a substantial economic burden of malnutrition. An increase in the prevalence from 2.5% (2006) to 3.6% (2014) was observed for older adults (≥ 65 years). Higher diagnosis prevalence was noted in correlation to older age, high-income community residence, Western region, urban areas, and Medicare coverage.
