Prevalence and early-life risk factors of school-age allergic multimorbidity: The EuroPrevall-iFAAM birth cohort

Allergy Jun 12, 2021

Sigurdardottir ST, Jonasson K, Clausen M, et al. - Studies have reported a higher coexistence of childhood asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis than can be expected by chance, suggesting a common mechanism. Researchers herein examined European primary school children with the aim to compare the prevalence and early-life risk factors of these diseases. They conducted a prospective multicenter observational EuroPrevall-iFAAM birth cohort study including data from 5,572 (mean age 8.2 years; 51.8% boys) of 10,563 children recruited at birth in 8 study centres. Following prevalence estimates were generated: asthma, 8.1%; allergic rhinitis, 13.3%; and eczema, 12.0%. Seven percent of the whole cohort had allergic multimorbidity, ranging from 1.2% (Athens, Greece) to 10.9% (Madrid, Spain). Based on findings, they suggest considering allergic multimorbidity as an important chronic childhood disease in Europe. Following were identified as risk factors for allergic multimorbidity with AICc: family-allergy-score; early-life allergy symptoms; and cesarean birth. Female gender; older siblings; and day care were identified as protective factors.
